Description

The original label, underneath one of the photos, in this old union case, reads: GENUINE / UNION CASE, IMPROVED / Fine Gilt and Burnished Hinge / S. PECK & CO., / MANUFACTURERS. Samuel Peck was the inventor of the material – shellac and wood fiber – from which such cases were made. This is authentic and in extraordinarily fine condition, undamaged in any way, a little darker than it appears in my photos. Frames are 3.25” x 4.25”.
There are two images inside, of young children, hand-painted watercolors, gilt framed. The one on the left, with the surrounding clouds, makes me suspect a deceased baby, but I don't really know. I haven't taken the images out of their frames for fear I would damage them. Clearly someone a long time ago put these images in this case for safe keeping. Then put the case away and seldom took it out again. It's amazingly pristine.

Not quite pristine, after all. After posting this listing, I noticed there is a hairline crack on one side, at the opening, above the catch. See last photo. And the catch doesn't quite catch.
